Winter Sports News Week 2/16-20/15
We hope that everyone enjoyed their three day weekend. Hopefully you were all able to get some much needed rest. In case you were wondering... Winnemucca is lovely this time of year although may I suggest finding an alternative for lodging. Our wrestlers were excellent representatives at the state wrestling meet held at the Winnemucca event center. They both won their first matches on Friday to advance to the semifinals. Luis Hernandez was losing in the third period 6-9, but was able to tie the match at 9-9 and nearly pinned his opponent yet time expired. In overtime he was able to get a takedown and won the match 11-9 to advance to the finals. Luis finished in second place as he was pinned in the finals. Miguel Guerra has two tough matches which he nearly won both, but was unable to over come his opponents.
Our bowling team participated in the state individual matches on Tuesday. Houston Hughes and Adam Geshke advanced to the final six and will bowl at the Orleans again on Thursday. David Galvan nearly missed the cut by just eight pins.
The boys basketball team played at Faith Lutheran last night, and had a fantastic come from behind victory. After being down 23-33 at halftime the boys came back in the third quarter to take the lead 51-46 led by Richard Nelson who provided a spark with his aggressive play. The game went back and fourth in the fourth quarter, but with 13.6 seconds left in the game and losing by one point Marc Silas attacked the basket and was fouled. He calmly made both free throws to give the boys the lead and the final score of 66-65. The boys next game will be held at Spring Valley High School on Thursday at 8:00pm vs. Desert Pines. A HUGE thanks to Mr. Baker, Mr. Beuning, Ms. Pinol, and Ms. Zelton as they did an amazing job with their performance groups.
The girls basketball team will begin their quest to state tomorrow (Wednesday) as they take on Cheyenne at 6:00pm.
Also, a big thank you to all the faculty and staff who have attended the various games and activities. Our kids really love seeing you at the games, and we appreciate you supporting them. Lastly, please congratulate Tony Cooper with wrestling, Cindy Ziegler with bowling, Steve Bentz with boys basketball, and Chris McFarland with girls basketball. They spend a lot of time with our kids, work hard at their craft, and should be all commended for successful seasons with more to come.
Proud to be a Cowboy!
